Although there are a marked differences in style and approach between the young and the mature Nietzsche, the books published during this time are marked by a consistent concern with the nature of culture. In terms of published works, Nietzsche’s creative life spanned the relatively brief period of 1872 to 1888. Rendered a helpless invalid, Nietzsche was cared for by his mother and then by his sister until his death eleven years later. In January 1889, Nietzsche suffered a devastating mental collapse.
